If you are planning a traditional funeral, you will need to determine how to convey your loved one from the funeral home to the location of the service, and then on to the place of final interment. Motorized funeral coaches—otherwise known as hearses— became popular back in the 1920s and are far and away the most widespread means of transporting a casket.

Most hearses are based on a regular car chassis that has been modified to accommodate a casket, but there are less conventional alternatives; a horse and carriage or a Harley Davidson or Volkswagen hearse, for example. Some limousine companies even have adapted vehicles like fire engines for funeral use.

In many states there are no laws that prohibit a family from transporting the deceased in a private vehicle, say a pickup truck. Before doing that, however, be sure to check with a funeral home or local authorities.

The family will also need transportation if you choose not to use your own vehicles. Let somebody else shoulder the responsibility; you will likely be in no condition to drive. Limousine companies offer a variety of luxury sedans precisely for that purpose.
