Reception Sites

A post-funeral gathering provides an opportunity to offer refreshments to the people who have traveled to the funeral. It also serves as a reunion of sorts; weddings and funerals are often the only time geographically separated family members and good friends have a chance to see one another.

Church fellowship halls have historically been the most popular venues, but there are many options available. Hotels, restaurant banquet rooms, catering halls, community centers and funeral home reception rooms are common sites. More unique settings include golf courses, vineyards, museums, charter yachts, lodges and arboretums. If conducive to a large gathering, holding the reception at the family home or at an outdoor setting provides a casual atmosphere as well.

If you are planning a reception at a site other than the place of worship where the service is held, there are a few things to keep in mind:
Check to see if the facility has tables and chairs to accommodate your group.

  • Adequate parking must be available within an easy walk of the venue.
  • Select a venue that is only a short drive from the service rather than across town.
  • Make an announcement at the conclusion of the funeral service regarding the time and location of the reception.
If possible, provide maps and directions in the funeral program.
