According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, more than 80 million households own at least one dog or cat. Pets bring an inestimable amount of joy to a family. Their love is unconditional and their loyalty unmatched by most humans. Unfortunately, that pleasure can turn to intense sadness when it is time to say goodbye to your special four-legged friend. 

As a tribute to their pet, many families choose to hold a special memorial service. A funeral is not only an act of love for your pet, it can also provide a certain amount of closure. For children, the loss of a pet may be their first experience with death and the grieving process. Conducting a special service just for Fido or Fluffy can be very healthy.

While the majority of pet funerals are held in backyards across the country, more and more pet owners are choosing to bid farewell more formally. To fill that need, a new industry has been born. Pet funeral homes offer caskets, urns, and memorial items and can arrange for burial or cremation of your pet. Most of them also have chapels that can be used for services and visitations. 

Wherever you hold the memorial service, gather the family together and say a prayer, share a poem or Scripture, or sing a song. Family members, especially children, will also benefit from sharing special memories of their furry friend.
